Frequently Asked Questions
This will depend largely on the program you choose, for a cash purchase you will receive 30% of the system cost back from the federal government. That is as long as you have a tax liability equivalent to the amount in question (check with your tax expert).
If you are financing your system you will have the option of keeping your tax credit, or paying it in towards the principal of your loan. If you are borrowing the full system price then your monthly payments will be higher. Most companies will give you 18 months to get your federal payment and pay it in to lower the principal of your loan.
If you have a lease or PPA your federal credit is baked into the pricing of your system. Because you do not own the system you do not have any of the responsibilities associated with the system.

There are many ads and rumors about solar that say that solar is free. While there are programs that provide full and partial funding for solar projects, those projects are largely limited to specialized circumstances. In the beginning when solar programs were first rolled out for residential customers, there were a ton of state and local programs that were in place to help popularize solar. However a lot of those smaller and more localized resources have dried up since many people have used those funds.
